Moving Home? Change the Locks First
Published 11 June 2026
When you collect the keys to a new home, you are collecting some of the keys. Previous owners, their relatives, old cleaners, dog walkers, builders and ex-partners may all hold copies. Insurers know this — and some policies are weakened if you cannot show who holds keys.
What actually needs changing
- uPVC/composite doors: only the euro cylinder needs swapping — quick and inexpensive. Upgrade to anti-snap (TS007 3-star) while you are at it.
- Timber doors: replace or re-pin the mortice lock and nightlatch. Check the mortice is BS3621 — most insurers require it.
- Garages, side gates, outbuildings: commonly forgotten, commonly targeted.
- Window locks: make sure you actually have the keys for them; replacements are cheap.
Cost-saving tip
Ask the locksmith about re-pinning (rekeying) existing good-quality locks instead of full replacement — the lock stays, the old keys stop working, and you pay less. One visit can usually sort the whole house.
